The Reliance Industries’ Viacom18 as well as the Sony Pictures Network India have emerged as the leading candidates in the race of acquiring the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) media rights. As reported by the Economic Times, the e-auction of the media rights has also been postponed to November 20 after it was originally scheduled for October 30.
Viacom18 and Sony in race for ACC media rights
The Viacom18, in compliance with the Star network, already holds broadcasting rights for IPL, ICC, BCCI, CSA and Cricket Australia. Acquiring the ACC media rights deal at this stage will further solidify Viacom18’s dominance in the world of cricket.
The other competitor, the Sony Pictures Network is also in race for acquiring the media rights for the ACC 2024-31 cycle.
Earlier this year, the ACC set a base price of $170 million for the media rights deal of the 2024-31 cycle. During this cycle, the ACC will organize multiple Asia Cup events, including four men’s Asia Cup editions and three women’s Asia Cup tournaments. The aforementioned time frame will also feature junior events like Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup, Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, Women’s Under-19 Asia Cup, and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
The first of the senior men’s events under the 2024-31 cycle will be organized next year through the 2025 Asia Cup tournament. Set to be hosted by India, the upcoming senior edition will be played in a T20I format. The 2025 event also marks the return of the tournament to India after a gap of 35 years, considering India last hosted an Asia Cup back in late-1990.
Bangladesh will host the subsequent Asia Cup in 2027, and Pakistan and Sri Lanka will organize the continental event in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
The last senior men’s Asia Cup edition was co-hosted by Sri Lanka and Pakistan back in 2023. Team India, under Rohit Sharma, ended up winning a lop-sided finale against Sri Lanka at Colombo.
